How to Choose a Snow Contractor in KW (Questions to Ask)

Seven questions that separate a real snow contractor from a cheap quote in Kitchener and Waterloo: trigger depth, response time, salt, insurance, terms.

In this post 11
  1. 1. What is your trigger, in centimetres?
  2. 2. How long after the snow stops?
  3. 3. What is your salting policy on a day that is icy but under the trigger?
  4. 4. Are you insured, and will you confirm it in writing?
  5. 5. What do the contract terms actually say?
  6. 6. Do you actually work on my street?
  7. 7. What is the number, for my driveway, before I say yes?
  8. Four answers that should end the call
  9. Turn it into a one-page comparison

  11. Getting a straight answer from us

Hiring a snow contractor in Kitchener-Waterloo usually happens in October, over the phone, in a few minutes. Somebody quotes a number, you say yes, and you find out in January what you actually bought.

This post is not a description of our service. It is a checklist for interviewing any snow contractor in Kitchener or Waterloo. Each question comes with the answer that should reassure you, the answer that should worry you, and our own reply to hold the other quotes against.

If what you are after instead is the line by line of what a single clearing includes, that is a different read: see “What’s included in every clearing” on our snow removal page. This page is about vetting the company, not the service.

1. What is your trigger, in centimetres?

A trigger is how much snow has to fall before a truck comes without you calling. It is the most revealing question on this list, because it tells you who decides.

A good answer: a specific number, said without hesitation, that applies to every customer on every plan.

A worrying answer: “when it needs it.” That means somebody at 5 a.m. decides whether your driveway counts, and it is not you. A number that is too high is the other trap. A 10 cm trigger means every snowfall under that line is yours to shovel.

Ours: 5 cm, everywhere we work, on every plan. Measured as accumulation on the ground, not read off a forecast.

2. How long after the snow stops?

The trigger answers if they are coming. This answers when, and the two get mixed up constantly.

A good answer: a window in hours, with a clear starting point.

A worrying answer: a window that starts at the first flake. Nobody can honour that through an overnight storm, so the promise is decorative. “First thing in the morning” is the same problem in a friendlier voice.

Ours: usually within 12 hours of the snow stopping. We wait for the system to pass on purpose, because clearing mid-storm means clearing again two hours later. If you need out sooner, faster clearing within 8 hours is $15 per visit plus HST. Being first on the route every storm isn’t a per-visit add-on anymore, it comes bundled with our Winter Priority plan, and Priority spots are limited each winter.

3. What is your salting policy on a day that is icy but under the trigger?

Ask it in exactly that shape. Anyone can say salt is included. The revealing part is the sub-trigger day, because a thaw and refreeze can leave a driveway slicker than a snowfall day, and it is under everybody’s trigger.

A good answer: salt included in every clearing, plus a stated policy for ice on non-clearing days.

A worrying answer: salt billed per application with no cap. That line item is what turns a cheap per-visit price into an expensive winter.

Ours: standard rock salt on the driveway is included in every clearing. Winter Plan customers also get unlimited ice control, so freezing rain and slick sub-trigger mornings carry no per event charge. Two upgrades exist, both $10 per visit plus HST: treated salt that keeps working in colder temperatures, and pet-safe salt that is easier on paws, concrete and garden beds. Pet-safe is the one to pick if a dog uses the driveway. On a Winter Plan, add-ons are quoted with your plan.

4. Are you insured, and will you confirm it in writing?

Ask this of every contractor, including us, and do not settle for a verbal yes. A plow works within a metre of your garage door, your car and your interlock.

A good answer: yes, in writing, with the company name on the paperwork matching the name on your invoice. Anyone properly covered can send it quickly because it is already on file.

A worrying answer: vagueness about the paperwork, or a business name on the quote that does not match the name on the certificate.

Ours: ask us before you pay a deposit and you get the answer in writing, with the business name on it matching the name on your invoice. Hold us to the same standard as every other quote on your list. We are not going to print a policy number on a blog post, because a number on a web page proves nothing. The document does.

5. What do the contract terms actually say?

Season agreements are where the surprises live, and four things settle most of them.

  • The dates. When does coverage start and stop? A package that quits on 15 March does not cover a KW spring.
  • What “unlimited” means. Unlimited clearings, or unlimited up to a number buried in the terms?
  • What happens if they do not show. Get that answer before you need it.
  • Cancellation and refunds. In writing, not as reassurance on the phone.

A worrying answer: a season price with no end date attached, or “unlimited” that turns out to mean the biggest few storms.

Ours: 1 November to 15 April, unlimited clearings at the 5 cm trigger, plus unlimited ice control. Our weather, delay and service terms are in plain words on the policies page, and the packages are laid out size by size on the snow removal page. Prefer everything bundled with a salt choice and faster clearing built in, tier by tier? That’s what our Winter plans do.

6. Do you actually work on my street?

Plenty of quotes come from crews serving “Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas”, who then discover in December that your street sits at the wrong end of a route.

A worrying answer: “surrounding areas”, with no areas named.

Ours: Kitchener and Waterloo, with Mannheim at the edge of the map. We do not service Cambridge. Boundaries and postal prefixes are on the service area page, and there are city pages for Kitchener and Waterloo.

7. What is the number, for my driveway, before I say yes?

A snow quote should be a fixed price tied to a named driveway size. A price with no size attached is not a quote.

Ours, plus HST on everything: per-visit clearing runs $53.99 for a 1 car driveway up to $107.99 for a 4 car, and up to $237.99 for a 10 car. The season option, Winter Plan Standard, runs $769.36 for a 1 car up to $1,538.86 for a 4 car (a Winter plan covers bigger driveways too, priced by size). At every size the season price works out to the per-visit price times 15, with 5% off for paying up front, so no size is quietly the bad deal. Every price we charge, lawn or snow, sits on the pricing page.

Four answers that should end the call

  • No trigger number, or a trigger they will not say out loud.
  • A price with no driveway size attached to it.
  • Insurance confirmed verbally and never in writing.
  • A contract that will not tell you its end date.

None of that is about being a small operation. We are one. It is about whether the person on the phone decided in advance what they owe you.

Turn it into a one-page comparison

Write the seven questions down one side of a page and three contractors across the top. The pattern shows up by the third call, and it is rarely about price. It is about how many boxes stay empty.

The eighth question, what a clearing includes edge to edge, is worth asking too. We answered that one in full on our snow removal page.

Questions homeowners ask us after reading this

Should I be calling more than one contractor?

Yes. Ask all of them these questions and write the answers down. A contractor comfortable being compared is usually the one worth hiring.

Is the cheapest per-visit price the best deal?

Not always. Compare what is included first. A cheaper visit that bills salt separately every time is often the more expensive winter.

When should I book?

Before the first real snowfall. Book in the fall and your winter is settled before the first flake, rather than sorted out the week you need it.

Do you do lawn care too, or only snow?

Both. The same crew that mows your lawn chemical-free through the summer clears the driveway in winter.
